Chronological Sketch of The Right Reverend Richard Allen
1760 – Richard Allen was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
1777 – Richard Allen was converted.
1782 – Richard Allen was licensed to preach.
1784 – Richard Allen attends Methodist Episcopal Church in America in Baltimore.
1786 – Richard Allen organizes a class of people of color.
1787 – “Free African Society” started and Richard Allen withdraws, leading others from St. George’s Methodist Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
1790 – Slavery abolished in Pennsylvania.
1791 – Richard Allen purchased a lot for the church at 6th and Lombard Streets.
1793 – Richard Allen heroically serves in the streets of Philadelphia during scourge of Yellow Fever epidemic.
1794 – Richard Allen sells a lot to Bethel Church and erects the first blacksmith ship – church dedicated to Bishop Asbury.
1800 – Richard Allen ordained a deacon by Bishop Asbury. Methodist General Conference permits ordination of Black preachers.
1808 – Insurance society started in Philadelphia by Richard Allen and others.
1816 – Bishop Allen consecrated first bishop of AME Church of Philadelphia.
1818 – Bishop Allen, along with Daniel Coker and James Championship, compile and publish first AME hymnal.
1828 – Morris Brown elected Bishop-Assistant to Bishop Allen at Philadelphia General Conference.
1831 – March 31, Bishop Allen died.
